The mission of Vista de Las Cruces, a collaborative, historically rich community, is to guarantee students a safe and positive environment from which they will emerge as well-rounded, forward-thinking citizens.

Rachel's Challenge

On Thursday, November 6, 2014, Vista middle school students (grades 6 - 8) will participate in an anti-bullying assembly with other middle school students from around the Santa Ynez Valley.  The assembly is based on "Rachel's Challenge."  You can click HERE to learn more about Rachel's Challenge.

5th Graders Learn About Early Americans

During the first couple of months of fifth grade the students study Early Americans, and learn about how their location, and the natural resources of the area, affect their lives. Each student chooses a tribe and does research on that tribe. They then imagine they are a child from that tribe, write “autobiographies”, and do drawings of themselves and their homes, which are then displayed on a poster. At home they also have to create some kind of artifact using as little modern technology as possible to represent their tribe. This year’s projects were awesome!  Please check out the slideshow of all the projects below.

Vista Wins Back-to-Back Girls Volleyball Championships

The Vista de Las Cruces girls volleyball team won its second straight Santa Ynez Junior High League championship on Thursday, Oct. 16.  The Wildcats record over the last two seasons is 26-0. Played at Jonata's Gym in Buellton, the Wildcats defended their title from 2013 against Santa Ynez Valley Christian Academy in a rematch of last season's final. Vista started the match with a kill from Avenlea McGraw followed by four more points served by Mikayla Butzke. From there Vista never looked back as they served aces, passed accurately and set up their hitters Butzke, Kristine Fimlaid and Lauren Holsted. Vista won the first set 25-13.The second set started out a little slower with both teams trading some missed serves, but then Vista quickly took over, pulling off a 25-14 win to beat the Eagles in two. The back row passing from Julie Lemus, Kayla Cuykendall and Holsted was a key to the victory. "I am tough on the girls because I know what it takes to win the championship," said Vista coach Karen McGraw "You have to practice like champions if you want to play like champions. “That requires hard work, dedication and staying mentally tough. I am proud of these girls and proud of their season." Go Wildcats!

Substitute Teachers Needed

Are qualified to substitute teach?  Would you like to work in a wonderful school environment?  If your answers are "yes" to these questions please click HERE and apply to be a substitute teacher at Vista.  We have lots of Professional Development going on for our teachers this year so there will be many opportunities to sub.

Common Core State Standards

Vista's teachers have wholeheartedly embraced the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  Besides continuing to gain a deeper understanding of the standards themselves, teachers are using programs such as College Preparatory Math (CPM), Engage New York Math, and Lucy Calkins's Writer's Workshop in their classrooms.  We are also focusing on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) across the entire school Preschool - 8th Grade.  Below are some helpful links you can use to learn more about Common Core yourself.

Algebra Walk & Notebook Challenge

Ms. Santos led her middle school students through some engaging hands-on math and science recently. The pictures below are of the Algebra Walk and the Notebook Challenge (how many notebooks can one piece of paper hold?) answer 173! Winners were Austin and Anna Pata.

Pyramid of Success

October’s character building block is Enthusiasm.  In Coach John Wooden’s book, Inch & Miles Journey to Success, Enthusiasm is represented by the character Rhonda the Robin who says:

Red Ribbon Week Aerial Photos

For Red Ribbon Week 2012, Vista's student body and staff dressed in red and formed the "V."  In 2013, we did the same thing for the letter, "I."  I bet you can predict which letter it will be in 2014 as we make sure we are a drug free one letter at a time.

State and Federal Accountability

Vista's performance on the state of California's Academic Performance Index (API) for 2013 is 911!

Vista met all required targets for the federal Adequate Yearly Progress Accountability System.

80% of our students scored Proficient or Advanced in Language Arts and 76% of our students scored Proficient or Advanced in Math.

You can view all of Vista's official accountability from the California Department of Education by clicking here.

Academic Standards

Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.  The assessment tied to these standards will be administered beginning in the 2014-15 school year.  Please use the links below to find out more information about standards:
