Vista's teachers have wholeheartedly embraced the transition to new State Standards. Besides continuing to gain a deeper understanding of the standards themselves, teachers are using programs such as College Preparatory Math (CPM), Engage New York Math, and Lucy Calkins's Writer's Workshop in their classrooms. We are also focusing on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) across the entire school Preschool - 8th Grade. Below are some helpful links you can use to learn more about the standards yourself.
Message from Superintendent/Principal Scott Turnbull
Dear Vista Stakeholders,
It is with mixed emotions that I publicly announce to you that I have accepted a new job. Beginning in July, I will serve as the Superintendent of Soquel Union Elementary School District in Santa Cruz County. Soquel has 5 schools and 2,000 students. It is a perfect next step for me career-wise, and a wonderful opportunity and new adventure for my family. Vista is so wonderful that it's a very tough place to choose to leave. I liken it to leaving home. Sometimes we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone in order to grow. I have been blessed to have served four years as your Superintendent/Principal at Vista. Truly blessed. I consider serving you all an honor and a privilege. I have worked with a most remarkable group of teachers dedicated to providing our students with a world-class education in a family atmosphere. The support staff is equally amazing. They make sure the food is cooked, water is delivered, books are kept, and a million other tasks to keep our little school chugging along. The parents and community that make up Vista have been a joy to serve. The Vista Volunteers and Vista Foundation have done so much to support our students. Parents have been an absolute pleasure to work with in forming a strong home/school connection to support our students. As far as the students themselves, that's the thing that chokes me up the most. I will miss them dearly, they are a special group of children. Getting to know each one individually has been a true gift. I want to thank the current board for their dedication to Vista Del Mar. We have faced tough issues and they have made tough decisions always in the best interest of children. I am extremely appreciative of the governance team we have worked so hard to develop. I also want to thank the board that hired me in 2012 for giving me a chance and allowing me to work at the best little school district in the world. I wish every single student, teacher, staff member, parent, and community member the very best in all future endeavors. I will be here through the end of the school year ensuring business-as-usual for your children and a smooth transition to the next lucky woman or man chosen to lead Vista Del Mar.

State Testing 2016
State Testing Season is upon us for grades 3 - 8 and a chance for our students to "show what they know." Our teachers have worked diligently to prepare students in accordance with state standards, upon which state testing is based on. This year, we will test one grade level per week. We ask that you do everything possible to ensure your students are in attendance each day that week and get plenty of sleep and healthy nutrition. The main test is the Smarter Balanced Assessment and is all computer-based so we will administer it in our computer lab. The schedule for Smarter Balanced Testing is as follows:
Week of April 25: 6th Grade
Week of May 2: 3rd Grade
Week of May 9: 4th Grade
Week of May 16: 8th Grade
Week of May 23: 7th Grade
Week of May 31: Makeups & Individuals
In addition, our students in grades 5 & 8 still take the paper-and-pencil California Standards Test (CST) in Science. 5th Graders will take the test on May 10 and 8th Graders will take it on May 12. They will take this test in their regular classroom where they receive science instruction. Below, please find a letter that further explains all components of the state testing program.
