Head Lice 101
Let's talk about a subject none of us really want to talk about: Head Lice. It's a common, if mildly unpleasant, part of growing up sometimes. If there's ever a lice outbreak at Vista, don't worry or panic, we have procedures in place to calmly deal with it. For all of us parents it's a good idea to educate ourselves before an outbreak occurs. In an effort toward that education we have linked Vista's Board Policy on head lice as well as some informative materials from the California Department of Education website.
Healthy Food Choices
Vista students are able to select healthy fruits and vegetables thanks to our amazing Food Service Coordinator, Corina Raya. Thanks Corina!
SBAC Score Samples
Students in grades 3 - 8 at Vista last school year will be receiving results from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test they took this past spring. To get a head-start on understanding these new results we are providing sample score reports and a video on the reports from the California Department of Education. The links for these resources are below. The video is in English and is just a few minutes long. After the English video finishes, a Spanish version begins. Please remember that these results will be baseline results. The results will not be the sole measure of school performance, they are just one part of a much bigger accountability remodeling effort. The scores cannot and should not be compared to the old STAR scores. The two tests are so different from each other it's truly an "apples to oranges" situation.
Picture Day is September 21
Get those snazzy outfit ready. Picture day will take place on the morning of Monday, September 21. We will start this year with our older students as they tend to move through the process very quickly. We'll make our way down to our Preschool & Kindergarten Students in order to make sure we don't have to rush them while the rest of the school waits. Please click HERE to see the flyer with more details and go to www.mylifetouch.com and use Vista's picture day ID of YG865810Y0.

Lompoc Bus Stop - Thank You
I just wanted to say a big, huge, "ginourmous," THANK YOU to all the parents at the Lompoc Bus Stop. As you can see by the attached pictures everyone is cooperating and parking in unison thus creating a very safe and orderly bus stop for our children. Teamwork makes the dream work. Plus, nobody was parked on the area with weeds and brown grass thus making sure we do our part in preventing any fires. Finally, nobody was parked on the lighter colored concrete so there was a clear designated place for the bus to park. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Red Ribbon Week Aerial Photos
For Red Ribbon Week 2012, Vista's student body and staff dressed in red and formed the "V." In 2013, we did the same thing for the letter, "I." In 2014, we curved around and made our "S." Guess what's next? Can you remember where you were in all three pictures?
Science Fair 2016
My hypothesis is that we will have some stellar science fair projects again this year.
Read Across America
The Vista Volunteers meet at 3 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month in the Staff Lounge. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Vista Del Mar Foundation
The Vista del Mar Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated solely to the betterment of education at Vista de Las Cruces School. The mission of the Foundation is to provide additional funding to the Vista del Mar Union School District to support co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
Vista's teachers have wholeheartedly embraced the transition to new State Standards. Besides continuing to gain a deeper understanding of the standards themselves, teachers are using programs such as College Preparatory Math (CPM), Engage New York Math, and Lucy Calkins's Writer's Workshop in their classrooms. We are also focusing on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) across the entire school Preschool - 8th Grade. Below are some helpful links you can use to learn more about the standards yourself.

Vista del Mar Union School District, established in 1923, is a single-school district located in the unicorporated area of Gaviota, approximately 30 miles north of scenic Santa Barbara on the central coast of California. The District Office and its K-8 school, Vista de Las Cruces, are surrounded by foothills covered with twisting sycamore and oak trees and fragrant coastal sage. The school and its surrounding communities embrace the valley's rich history into its curriculum, providing a warm atmosphere and creative educational educational experience for each of its students.
