One of our District Goals is to achieve a balanced budget in the years to come. We hope to begin on that path and make significant progress in the next 2-5 years. Our governance team is seeking the public’s help to ensure that we don’t overlook any possibilities and ideas for positive change that you may have. We believe your input on how we may accomplish this challenge is vital to our success. You are welcome to submit ideas prior to the meeting on our online input forum by clicking HERE. 5th Graders Learn About Early Americans
During the first couple of months of fifth grade the students study Early Americans, and learn about how their location, and the natural resources of the area, affect their lives. Each student chooses a tribe and does research on that tribe. They then imagine they are a child from that tribe, write “autobiographies”, and do drawings of themselves and their homes, which are then displayed on a poster. At home they also have to create some kind of artifact using as little modern technology as possible to represent their tribe. This year’s projects were awesome! Please check out the slideshow of all the projects below.

Common Core State Standards
Vista's teachers have wholeheartedly embraced the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Besides continuing to gain a deeper understanding of the standards themselves, teachers are using programs such as College Preparatory Math (CPM), Engage New York Math, and Lucy Calkins's Writer's Workshop in their classrooms. We are also focusing on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) across the entire school Preschool - 8th Grade. Below are some helpful links you can use to learn more about Common Core yourself.

6th Grade Camp GoFundMe Campaign
6th Grade Camp (i.e. Outdoor Science School) at Rancho Alegre near Lake Cachuma is a Vista tradition. This year's 6th Graders are trying a new tactic for fundraising by doing a GoFundMe Campaign. Rather than giving up 50% or more of the profits to a fundraising company for random items, GoFundMe will allow students and families to see 100% of the proceeds (minus a small processing charge). Every dollar will help. Thank you in advance for your consideration in donating to this worthy cause. If you would like to learn more about the camp's excellent program you can click HERE to go to their website.

For Red Ribbon Week 2012, Vista's student body and staff dressed in red and formed the "V." In 2013, we did the same thing for the letter, "I." In 2014, we curved around and made our "S." Guess what's next? Can you remember where you were in all three pictures?

Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace. The assessment tied to these standards will be administered beginning in the 2014-15 school year. Please use the links below to find out more information about standards:
