"Learning for Life"

The mission of Vista de Las Cruces, a collaborative, historically rich community, is to guarantee students a safe and positive environment from which they will emerge as well-rounded, forward-thinking citizens.

Vista's Open House is on Thursday, May 28, 2015

Vista's Open House is on the evening of Thursday, May 28, 2015.
Dinner will start at 5:30.
8th Grade will be hosting the dinner of delicious TAMALES.  The dinner will include rice and beans, and chips and salsa.  Your choice of tamales will be chicken or pork.  Dinners for adults will cost $8.00 and dinner for children will cost $5.00  This dinner represents our wonderful 8th grade class's last push to make it to their trip to Washington D.C.  Please support them if you can.
Open House festivities will start at 6:30 with some brief performances by our orchestras and our dancing first-graders.
We are hoping for a big turnout for Open House.  In fact, each teacher is offering their students an incentive for their parents attending the event.  Each Teacher will have a sign-in sheet that evening so please be sure to sign-in when you go into your child's class that evening.
The flyer for the evening's events can be accessed by clicking HERE.
If you have any questions at all about Open House please feel free to contact me in any way.

Smarter Balanced is Here

We are smack dab in the middle of our state testing using the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Test. This is the computer-based test that all students in grades 3 - 8 in California (and in 19 other states) are taking this Spring. This test replaced the old STAR Test. Students have been overall focused and well-prepared.

If you would like to see the Practice Smarter Balanced Tests please click HERE.  Students can take these tests on their own if they want. Teachers can display them to the whole class to discuss the items together. Students can work on the problems in cooperative groups. They can be used in any way that helps support our students. If you have any questions about SBAC please feel free to contact me (Scott Turnbull) or your child's teacher.

First Grade Field Trip

In April 2015 our Vista's first-grade students took a field trip to Buellton to learn about civic services such as police, fire, and postal.  They learned a lot and had a great time doing it.  IMG_0828.JPG

Common Core State Standards

Vista's teachers have wholeheartedly embraced the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  Besides continuing to gain a deeper understanding of the standards themselves, teachers are using programs such as College Preparatory Math (CPM), Engage New York Math, and Lucy Calkins's Writer's Workshop in their classrooms.  We are also focusing on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) across the entire school Preschool - 8th Grade.  Below are some helpful links you can use to learn more about Common Core yourself.

Vista Volunteers

Red Ribbon Week Aerial Photos

For Red Ribbon Week 2012, Vista's student body and staff dressed in red and formed the "V."  In 2013, we did the same thing for the letter, "I." In 2014, we curved around and made our "S."  Guess what's next?  Can you remember where you were in all three pictures?
