"Learning for Life"

The mission of Vista de Las Cruces, a collaborative, historically rich community, is to guarantee students a safe and positive environment from which they will emerge as well-rounded, forward-thinking citizens.

What's Up Doc? Hands-On Learning, that's what's up!

There's no better way for students to learn to appreciate nature than to get their hands down in the dirt and do some gardening with our Chief Gardener, Mrs. Thielst.  These Kindergarten students are showing off the "fruits" of their labor.  garden kids april 2015.jpg

The Vista Volunteers arranged this FREE of charge. “The Alley Cats present an interactive, fun, and informative assembly - teaching students about elements of music and performance through one of America's own musical art forms: Doo-Wop. Since the Fall of 2001, the group has performed at over 2,000 schools throughout the United States.” You can check out their website at: http://www.thealleycats.com/arts-ed.iml.

If you would like to see the Practice Smarter Balanced Tests please click HERE.  Students can take these tests on their own if they want. Teachers can display them to the whole class to discuss the items together.  Students can work on the problems in cooperative groups.  They can be used in any way that helps support our students.

Roadmap for Vista's Future: Community LCAP Input

Our Governance Team (School Board + Administration) invites your input.

What:          Public Hearing

When:         Wednesday, May 13, 2015 @ approximately 6:15 (following the regular board meeting)

Where:        Vista Library

Why:            To hear community input on a Roadmap for Vista’s Future.

Background: Vista is a very unique school and we want to preserve the qualities that make it special.  At the same time, we are being faced with some difficult budgetary decisions in our effort to ensure the long-term stability of our amazing school.  One of our District Goals is to achieve a balanced budget in the years to come.  We hope to begin on that path and make significant progress in the next 2-5 years. Our governance team is seeking the public’s help to ensure that we don’t overlook any possibilities and ideas for positive change that you may have. We believe your input on how we may accomplish this challenge is vital to our success.  You are welcome to submit ideas prior to the meeting on our online input forum by clicking HERE. All input will be used to help inform our Local Control & Accountability Plan (LCAP).

First Grade Field Trip

In April 2015 our Vista's first-grade students took a field trip to Buellton to learn about civic services such as police, fire, and postal.  They learned a lot and had a great time doing it.  IMG_0828.JPG

Common Core State Standards

Vista's teachers have wholeheartedly embraced the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  Besides continuing to gain a deeper understanding of the standards themselves, teachers are using programs such as College Preparatory Math (CPM), Engage New York Math, and Lucy Calkins's Writer's Workshop in their classrooms.  We are also focusing on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) across the entire school Preschool - 8th Grade.  Below are some helpful links you can use to learn more about Common Core yourself.

Healthy Food Choices

Vista students are able to select healthy fruits and vegetables thanks to our amazing Food Service Coordinator, Corina Raya.  Thanks Corina!

Red Ribbon Week Aerial Photos

For Red Ribbon Week 2012, Vista's student body and staff dressed in red and formed the "V."  In 2013, we did the same thing for the letter, "I." In 2014, we curved around and made our "S."  Guess what's next?  Can you remember where you were in all three pictures?
