"Learning for Life"
The mission of Vista de Las Cruces, a collaborative, historically rich community, is to guarantee students a safe and positive environment from which they will emerge as well-rounded, forward-thinking citizens.
Please remember and plan for Second Trimester Parent Conferences which will take place on Monday – Thursday, February 9 – 12, 2015. There will be early dismissal (12:26) each day during that week. There will be no After School Program that week. All students in grades K – 5 will have a conference while students in grades 6 – 8 will have one as deemed necessary by teachers. Your child’s teacher will send home a notice with the date and time of the conference.
Spelling list study guides provided by the school have been sent home to study. We want to emphasize that if a particular round goes too long then we will start using words from a more advanced list. Teachers have been asked to find the top 3 spellers in their class using their own discretion. Prizes will be awarded to the top winners including a Kindle Paperwhite to the overall winner (we gotta keep them reading)!
For students in grades 4 - 8, who think they might be moving on to the Santa Barbara County Spelling Bee later in the month of February here is the link to the County wide list. It's never too early to study.
Explore New Websites
Here's a corner of our website that will highlight interesting, engaging, and fun sites on the internet you may want to try with your children. The first one is Wolfram Alpha (http://www.wolframalpha.com). It's a "knowledge engine" as opposed to a "search engine." Type in anything. A fun one is just to type "hamburger hotdog" to see how quickly the engine develops comparison tables and other interesting facts. The possibilities are endless. Have Fun!
Egg Drop & Cell Models
Middle School Science can be challenging & fun at the same time. Check out these photos for proof!
5th Graders Learn About Early Americans
During the first couple of months of fifth grade the students study Early Americans, and learn about how their location, and the natural resources of the area, affect their lives. Each student chooses a tribe and does research on that tribe. They then imagine they are a child from that tribe, write “autobiographies”, and do drawings of themselves and their homes, which are then displayed on a poster. At home they also have to create some kind of artifact using as little modern technology as possible to represent their tribe. This year’s projects were awesome! Please check out the slideshow of all the projects below.

VASE: Jr. Chefs in Acton
Thursday, October 16, 2014 was the first day of the Junior Chefs Class. It's a part of our Vista After School Enrichment (VASE) offerings. These students had fun making their own salad with homemade croutons!
Common Core State Standards
Vista's teachers have wholeheartedly embraced the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Besides continuing to gain a deeper understanding of the standards themselves, teachers are using programs such as College Preparatory Math (CPM), Engage New York Math, and Lucy Calkins's Writer's Workshop in their classrooms. We are also focusing on the 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) across the entire school Preschool - 8th Grade. Below are some helpful links you can use to learn more about Common Core yourself.
Pyramid of Success
October’s character building block is Enthusiasm. In Coach John Wooden’s book, Inch & Miles Journey to Success, Enthusiasm is represented by the character Rhonda the Robin who says:

6th Grade Camp GoFundMe Campaign
6th Grade Camp (i.e. Outdoor Science School) at Rancho Alegre near Lake Cachuma is a Vista tradition. This year's 6th Graders are trying a new tactic for fundraising by doing a GoFundMe Campaign. Rather than giving up 50% or more of the profits to a fundraising company for random items, GoFundMe will allow students and families to see 100% of the proceeds (minus a small processing charge). Every dollar will help. Thank you in advance for your consideration in donating to this worthy cause. If you would like to learn more about the camp's excellent program you can click HERE to go to their website.

Red Ribbon Week Aerial Photos
For Red Ribbon Week 2012, Vista's student body and staff dressed in red and formed the "V." In 2013, we did the same thing for the letter, "I." In 2014, we curved around and made our "S." Guess what's next? Can you remember where you were in all three pictures?

Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the standards to prepare students for success in college and the workplace. The assessment tied to these standards will be administered beginning in the 2014-15 school year. Please use the links below to find out more information about standards:
